Dr Darius Soonawalla is an orthopaedic surgeon in private practice since 1994 with a special interest in the field of joint replacement. After completing MBBS, Diploma in orthopaedics, DNB and then Master in Surgery (orthopaedics), he completed his training in Mumbai and then went to the UK, where he completed his FRCS. He worked for four years in UK, in leading orthopaedic centers, before returning to Mumbai. He has also trained in Australia in Computer Assisted Joint Replacement. Dr Soonawalla has written several scientific papers in national and international journals and has made presentations and given talks in many conferences and symposia. He has worked as a lecturer in orthopaedics in Mumbai University and continues to be actively involved in the training of residents. He is regularly on the faculty at various joint replacement courses where he gives lectures and demonstration surgeries for other orthopaedic surgeons. Dr Soonawalla is the first in India to do Minimally Invasive Total Hip and Knee Replacements, which is a newly introduced technique internationally. He has also designed surgical instruments and techniques for these surgeries. Dr Soonawalla has won several awards including the A K Talwalkar prize which he received before going to the UK. Recently he was awarded the Dr K T Dholakia prize for his pioneering work in Minimally Invasive Joint Replacement. He was selected for the prize by renowned orthopaedic surgeon from New York, Dr Ranawat, who operated on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
