| Biography |
Dr Tapan Saikia, MD is Head of Medical Oncology, Prince Aly Khan Hospital and Transplant Physician at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai. He is a graduate of Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh University, Assam. He is an ex-professor of medical oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital and has huge experience in the field of biological and haematological malignancies.
Dr Saikia also has diverse and rich fellowship, academic and research experience. He has been a research associate at the Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital, New York, working on improving the purging techniques in autologous stem cell transplants, and at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he worked on cell cycle studies in leukemias and myelodysplasia. He has been a visiting scientist at Rush Cancer Center, Chicago, where he worked on apoptosis in leukemias and myelodysplasia. In the past, he has been External Examiner of DM (Medical Oncology) at AIIMS, New Delhi and Ahmedabad University. He is a member of many medical professional societies, including the Indian Association of Cancer Research, and the Scientific Advisory Committee – Institute of Immunohematology (IIH), ICMR, Mumbai.
Dr Saikia has special interest, and is working, in the field of understanding biology and treatment of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma (LLM) including hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Currently, he is involved in a patient oriented program called Myeloma India Foundation (MIF), aimed to increase awareness of this among people. He is also involved in organizational work of the Asia-Pacific Blood/Marrow Transplantation (APBMT) and the World Blood/Marrow Transplantation (WBMT) as a representative of the Indian Stem Cell Transplanters (ISCT). These activities will impact how transplanters across the world work as one group.
Dr Saikia has won several awards for his work in medical oncology.
