Stay skin healthy

Your skin reflects your health. Good food, regular exercise and basic skin care go a long way in keeping you and your skin healthy. Here are some tips you must follow regularly:

1. The skin expels oils, toxins and sweat through its pores; so it helps to keep your skin clean. Gently splash lukewarm water on your face, to keep it clean. Facial care should include the neck also.

2. Knowing your skin type is very important. Skin is either normal, dry or oily, or a combination type. Your complexion may be fair, and therefore prone to getting burnt, or it may be a medium tone, prone to getting tanned, or you may have a dark skin tone that rarely burns. Consult your dermatologist before choosing any over-the-counter skin product.

3. Cleansing, toning, moisturizing is the simplest, routine skin care regimen to keep your skin rejuvenated.

Cleansing clears the clogged pores, and helps prevent acne and blemishes. Gently apply the cleanser to your skin, rub with moist cloth, and remove with plenty of lukewarm water.Toning comes next. Toners have alcohol and water mixture, and helps you remove fine traces of oil, dirt and make-up that might have been missed out while cleansing. Toning tightens the skin and absorbs the moisturizer. Toners containing cetyl alcohol could be too strong for the skin. Use a spray bottle instead of your hands.

Your moisturizer should suit your skin type. It helps to minimize dryness and skin peeling. Moisturizing after hydrating the skin gives the best results. Choose gel-based moisturizer for oily skin and heavier lotions for dry. It is also beneficial to use one with UV protection elements in it.

Follow this daily skin care routine twice, in the morning and night. Use different creams for day and night.

4.
Protecting your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation can prevent damage to the skin. Over exposure to sun to UV radiation may cause freckles, wrinkles, discoloration, moles or pre-cancerous or cancerous growths. In fact, most skin cancers are related to sun exposure.

Apply sunscreen in all seasons at least 20 minutes before going out in the sun. Use water-resistant sunscreens, having a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least more than 15. Long-sleeved clothes, a well-brimmed hat, and sunglasses can also protect your skin from the sun.

5. Bathing in extremely hot or cold water can damage the tiny blood vessels in your skin. Lukewarm water is the best for all seasons. Also avoid harsh chemical based products and medicated soaps that might irritate your skin.

6. Unhygienic and unclean bed sheets, synthetic pillows and mattresses might lead to rashes and irritation in your skin. Change them often and wash them in hot water and safe detergents.

7. Choose your garments depending on your skin type. Wear cotton clothes during summer. Synthetic fabrics can be irritating to the skin.

8. Have about 2-5 liters of water daily to have a healthy, glowing skin.

9. Your skin will not glow without a healthy diet. Foods rich in antioxidants and vitamins, found in fruits and vegetables boost skin health and immunity. Avoid fried and greasy foods, and intake of alcohol and tobacco.

10. Avoid food and beverages that cause skin allergies. Your skin may react to certain foods due to the presence of preservatives. Identify and avoid them.

11. Regular exercising energizes your mind and body. It reduces anxiety and stress, and improves blood flow, which ultimately reflects on your skin. It’s important to hydrate your body before and after exercise for better blood flow to the skin. People who exercise, or practice yoga, are known to have healthy, glowing skin. Put away your gym clothes for wash, after use. It’s advisable to shower after exercise.
