Bread upma recipe

Date updated: Thu, Feb 25, 2010
By Bolohealth
Upma is a regular snack in Indian households. It is easy to prepare but when you replace the sooji with bread, it becomes easier and faster to cook. The cooking style remains similar to sooji upma, and the taste is great too. This is a low fat and low cholesterol recipe with high fiber to suit people aiming to lose weight and take care of their health.

Ingredients:
8-10 whole wheat bread slices
1 onion, finely chopped
2 tomatoes, finely chopped
2-3 green chilies, slit
1/2 teaspoon ginger paste
1 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon oil
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1.2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/4 teaspoon asafetida powder
Salt to taste
8-10 curry leaves
1 tablespoon coriander leaves, finely chopped

Method:
Cut the bread slices into small pieces.

In a cooking vessel, heat oil and add mustard and cumin seeds. Add asafetida when the spluttering of the seeds stop.

Now add the curry leaves, slit green chilies, chopped onion and tomatoes. Stir and cook for five minutes and mix well.

Add the cut bread pieces and mix well with the tomato and onion mixture.

Cook for another five minutes and stir the mixture occasionally.

Garnish with the chopped coriander leaves and serve hot. Add tomato sauce if you like.

Total calorie count: 118 calories per serving.
