Positive emotions, key to curing depression

Mumbai, December 23: Depression in a person may not allow him to sustain activities in the brain areas which are linked to positive emotions, according to a new study conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It has challenged the previous belief that a depressed person show less brain activity in areas linked to positive emotions.

Termed as anhedonia, this is an inability to experience happiness from the normal daily events like eating, etc. The researchers found these affected people beginning the activity normally but are unable to sustain it further. Anhedonia is one of the key symptoms of mood disorders and clinical depression. Depression is gradually growing to become a serious mental disorder, which every other person is now facing.

Lack of interest in activities, low mood swings accompanied by low self esteem, tiredness and even, major weight loss or gain are some of the symptoms which denote the person's depressive mood. In order to overcome, positive emotions are very important. Pictures of positive rewards when involved in some activity helps the person sustain through in daily life. It also enhances the person's positive emotional experience which ultimately contributes in his overall health and well being.

Stress, count it as the root cause of depression may be from peers at workplace or schools and colleges, in our personal relationships or simply due to anxiety about certain things. It also gives birth to cardiac diseases, hypertension, and diabetes. However, there are ways to cope with stress also which also can reduce depression in a person. Involvement in social activities for elder, having a pet around, start any hobby which fills positive emotions in your brain areas can help you beat your depression mood. Music therapy works wonder for all, children and adults.
